Sexual predator at Ward Circle

September 5, 2008

The Northwest quadrant of DC has a gropist on the prowl.  Five sexual assaults have been reported in eight weeks, all within 3 blocks of American University.

The assaults occurred on the 4100 and 4200 blocks of Massachusetts Ave. and Nebraska Ave., where many students live.  The attackers groped the victims, all female, and in some cases tried to force them into nearby bushes.  All of the attacks occurred approximately 10pm.

An armed robbery of AU students also occurred two weeks ago near Tenley circle.  I’m not trying to be alarmist, but crime in the area has spiked dramatically in recent weeks.

Statistically, the vast majority of sex crime survivors know their attacker, and attacks from strangers are fairly unusual.  You have more to fear from a boyfriend than from a stranger, all things considered.  The point is, be careful, and be aggressive if anyone makes you uncomfortable.

We urge all residents and visitors in the Ward Circle area to be particularly cautious at night, especially if you are female.  Do not walk alone at night.  Do not wear headphones when walking or jogging.  Do not let a phone call or text distract you from your surroundings.

Law enforcement here is egregiously absent, so unfortunately you’re on your own.  But there are ways to reduce your risk of being attacked.

Ride the bus or hitch a ride with a friend who is sober.  Enroll in a personal defense course.  Party safely, and assert your limits very clearly.  Don’t let these crimes go unreported and unpunished.

Most importantly, show AU Public Safety and MPD you’ve had enough of their bullshit.  They are failing at their most fundamental job, which is to protect students.  Hold them accountable for their failures, demand better crime prevention programs, and demand they pursue the perpetrators to the fullest extent possible.

If Public Safety doesn’t step up, I will quit my night job and organize teams to patrol the Ward Circle neighborhood on foot.  I will post Wanted fliers with info on Gropist McGee.  And if that doesn’t work, I will buy a baseball bat, buy a handgun (Thanks U.S. Supreme Court!).

I will learn to use them, and I will enlist some fierce-ass women to start packing and start patrolling Rapist Alley.  The Black Panthers did it when Oakland PD wouldn’t protect the community, and we can too.

So helpful hint to Gropist McGee, if he or his friends find our blog: The feminists who care about AU don’t fuck around.  We are livid.  God help the sonofabitch if I ever find him.
